Pleads guilty - August 17, 2012

"With his head bowed throughout his hearing former El Paso County Commissioner Willie Gandara Jr. pleaded guilty Friday afternoon to federal drug trafficking charges in front of U.S. District Court Judge Frank Montalvo. Gandara, supported by his family in the courtroom, kept his head down throughout the whole hearing and did not look at Montalvo once. He pled guilty to conspiring to possess a controlled substance with the intent to distribute. The charge carries a fine of up to $1 million and a maximum 20 year sentence." [Sentenced to 6 1/2 years.]

Arrested by DEA for marijuana trafficking - February 24, 2012

"El Paso County Commissioner Guillermo “Willie” Gandara Jr., 37, who is currently a Democratic candidate for the Texas legislature, along with Juan Canales, 50, were arrested late Wednesday night following a multi-agency investigation that included the DEA and FBI. A federal grand jury indictment charges the defendants with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 50 kilograms or more of marijuana, and one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana." "Guillermo "Willie" Gandara Sr. was recalled by voters Saturday night from his elected position as mayor of Socorro. Gandara was indicted in September 2010 prior to council members passing an ordinance to hold a recall election. KFOX-14's media partners at The El Paso Times reports that nearly 70 percent of voters wanted him to leave office."

"Eleven El Pasoans, including Socorro Mayor Guillermo "Willie" Gandara Sr., conspired with each other and used bribes to ensure that Access Healthsource received several million-dollar contracts with the school districts and the county, according to federal prosecutors. The charges against the 11 are detailed in a sealed federal indictment that was issued Tuesday. "Musto's troubles began in 1977, when investigations began on the city's dealings with Rudolph Orlandini, who was hired for a $2.2 million project to construct additions on Emerson and Union Hill high schools. However, it was discovered that $12 million had been spent before the additions were completed. In 1979, preparations for the impending trial were on the horizon. Deputy Public Works Director Bruce D. Walter and Board of Education Secretary Robert Menendez (now New Jersey's Junior Senator in the U.S. Senate) formed Alliance Civic Association and publicly questioned the overrun costs on Orlandini's construction company. Then in April of 1981, the grand jury indicted Musto, 64 at the time, and six others, including Hudson County officials and businessmen, on 36 counts of racketeering, extortion and fraud. Musto's conviction was met with disbelief from some of his contemporaries."
