The comedy of the Obama Administration
June 21, 2009
A lot of jokes have been made about the Obama Administration’s bungling on the world stage. From buying movie DVDs for the blind Prime Minister of Great Britain—DVDs which were not even the correct format for British DVD players—to violating protocol with the queen and offending our allies in France and Germany, Obama and his representatives have acted like a group of teenagers set loose in the mall, irritating everybody they meet.
Here’s an ironic piece of idiocy that we can add to the list: on June 2, ten days before the Iranian election, FoxNews reported this story:
“SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- In a new overture to Iran, the Obama administration has authorized U.S. embassies around the world to invite Iranian officials to Independence Day parties they host on or around July 4th.Given the events which have transpired since the Iranian election, is this just too funny or what?
A State Department cable sent to all U.S. embassies and consulates late last week said that U.S. diplomats could ask their Iranian counterparts to attend the festivities, which generally feature speeches about American values, fireworks, hot dogs and hamburgers.”
I would hate to be the poor sap diplomat who was on vacation early in June and didn’t get the invitation delivered before the election. Can you imagine walking into an Iranian embassy right now, while that country is in the process of viciously cracking down on popular uprisings of its own citizens demanding more freedom, and inviting them to an Independence Day party?
