Democrats, cars, and shameless lies
June 8, 2009
Because there seem to be no consequences for Democrats when they lie, they’re becoming more ostentatious and daring. Now they don’t care even when a lie is exposed in mere days. Witness the following timeline involving Steve Rattner—the Obama Administration’s “car czar”—Barney Frank—chairman of the House Financial Services Committee—and General Motors:
That’s a three-day turnaround between the original statement promising that the bailout will not result in the federal government making day-to-day business decisions for GM, to the point where Barney Frank holds a press conference to admit they were lying through their teeth. Even for Democrats, that’s pretty damned brazen.
Monday, June 1, 8:00 AM—GM files for bankruptcy in New York, and announces the closing of 14 manufacturing plants plus 3 SPO (Service Parts Organization) plants as part of their reorganization plan.
Monday, June 1, afternoon—Rattner gives a rare on-the-record interview to Detroit News reporter David Shepardson in which he says the government will vote on new board members for GM but will not make any day-to-day business decisions:
“We will refrain from voting on other matters. No plant decisions, no job decisions, no dealer decisions, no color of car decisions. Those are all going to be left to management.”Thursday, June 4—Barney Frank convinces GM to change its decision to close an SPO plant in Frank’s congressional district:
“I greatly appreciate General Motors’ willingness to take into consideration the wider needs of the company and especially the community,” Frank said in a statement. “Keeping the facility open for this extra time gives workers a chance to look at other opportunities, while at the same time continuing to provide for their families.”
Will Americans ever get tired of being lied to?
